Welcome to the Norwich Free Academy Amateur Radio, Engineering, and Space (ARES) Club.

Clark and Scope

Our high school students are active in many projects that involve amateur radio, engineering, and astronomy. We've launched high altitude balloons to gather meteorological information and transmit telemetry data, live video, and (sometimes) recover them. We've built robots to roam our campus and transmit live video, all from the comfort of our beloved ham shack. We promote international goodwill by talking with amateur radio operators all over the world using transceivers and antennas with our voice and Morse Code. Our students have also peered into deep space to view clusters, nebula, and galaxies with our newly remodeled observatory.

We are callsign W1HLO and have been on the air since 1944.

Dave K1ZZ and the W1HLO Gang

Here we are with W1HLO alum, Dave K1ZZ '67, teaching the W1HLO students how to make dipole antennas. CQ... CQ...
